Molasses is used to supplement the diet of cattle to improve digestion, and as an additional source of nutrients. Intake needs to be regulated to prevent over-consumption, which is mechanically limited by the amount the animal can lick off the wheels before their tongue gets tired.<\/p>\n<p>The creative shape required for the mould was difficult to produce using the 2D\u00a0\u00a0 drawing facilities available, so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.motovated.co.nz\">Motovated Design &amp; Analysis Ltd<\/a> was invited to contribute its 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) capability to help solve the design issues involved. This proved to be a very successful decision.<\/p>\n<p>The design issues to be solved were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Manufactured easily and economically using Rotomoulded Polyethylene.<\/li>\n<li>Sufficient stiffness to withstand trampling by calves and yearlings.<\/li>\n<li>Incorporate handholds to allow transport.<\/li>\n<li>Simple assembly of dispensing wheels and wheel guides.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text]<div id=\"ultimate-heading-66736a633c9305b7c\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-66736a633c9305b7c uvc-750  uvc-heading-default-font-sizes\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-66736a633c9305b7c h3'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h3 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#0F204B;margin-bottom:30px;\">Solution<\/h3><\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]Working from a plywood prototype a number of concepts were presented, including internal and external ribs to add stiffness, and a curved top. The 3D nature of the modelling provided for easy visualisation and quick modification.<\/p>\n<p>A novel \u201cclick-in\u201d wheel guide design was chosen to avoid the need for a complicated pin assembly, and allowed the product to be produced predominately using rotomoulding.[\/vc_column_text]<div class=\"ult-spacer spacer-6a633c9305b8c\" data-id=\"6a633c9305b8c\" data-height=\"20\" data-height-mobile=\"20\" data-height-tab=\"20\" data-height-tab-portrait=\"\" data-height-mobile-landscape=\"\" style=\"clear:both;display:block;\"><\/div><div id=\"ultimate-heading-49196a633c9305b97\" class=\"uvc-heading ult-adjust-bottom-margin ultimate-heading-49196a633c9305b97 uvc-5857  uvc-heading-default-font-sizes\" data-hspacer=\"no_spacer\"  data-halign=\"left\" style=\"text-align:left\"><div class=\"uvc-heading-spacer no_spacer\" style=\"top\"><\/div><div class=\"uvc-main-heading ult-responsive\"  data-ultimate-target='.uvc-heading.ultimate-heading-49196a633c9305b97 h3'  data-responsive-json-new='{\"font-size\":\"\",\"line-height\":\"\"}' ><h3 style=\"font-weight:bold;color:#0F204B;margin-bottom:30px;\">Results<\/h3><\/div><\/div>[vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]The final product was a 550 litre capacity, easily moulded design weighing just 40 kg when empty. Motovated produced manufacturing drawings for the moulds, with an expansion factor added to accommodate for shrinkage of the parts on cooling.<\/p>\n<p>Information was provided for removing flashing
