Background
Fuelchief Ltd is a New Zealand company specialising in fuel storage solutions and fuel management systems, operating across Australasia and the Pacific region. As part of their range, Fuelchief have developed trailer tanks with 1,500 and 1,900 litres capacity.
Fuelchief approached Motovated Design & Analysis to validate the prototype trailer tank designs and to complete a compliance assessment against the requirements of the Worksafe NZ Approved Code of Practice for Flammable Liquids Road Tank Wagons. The goal was to validate the designs and issue a CPEng design statement, so the design could be reviewed and approved by a HSWA compliance certifier.
Solution
- Fuelchief provided CAD models of the two prototype sizes to Motovated, and provided access to a physical prototype that had already been built. We went through the requirements of the Approved Code of Practice, checked if and how the design satisfied these requirements, and carried out calculations and analysis as needed to confirm compliance.Motovated used Finite Element Analysis to simulate the 35 kPa pressure test and the performance of the rear bumper under rear impact and vehicle under-run situations. We also used calculations to verify the strength of the connection between the trailer and the tank, the Static Roll Threshold of the trailer, and the hitch downforce at different fill levels.Some design changes were required after these calculations and design feature assessments, these were fed back toFuelchief design staff and incorporated into the models and drawings. After checking these drawings, Motovated were able to issue a CPEng design statement attesting that the trailer tank designs satisfied the Approved Code of Practice.
Results
The tank trailer drawings, fabrication details and Motovated’s CPEng design statement were sent through to a HSWA compliance certifier, who reviewed the package of information and issued a TAN number for each design. This allows the designs to be constructed and legally used throughout New Zealand.
