How Can NZ Compete?
Collaboration, working together, pooling and sharing our resources is necessary for NZ Manufacturers and Suppliers to compete on the world stage. Our manufacturers need access to our best engineers, and engineering best practices, if they are to bring world-class products to world markets. Often our manufacturers are not in main centres, and don’t have large engineering teams in-house. They also have peaks and troughs in their product development, engineering certification and machine design needs. But NZ has the best engineers I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot of engineering.
- So how do we connect NZ’s best manufacturers to the amazing engineering talent that is available in NZ?
- How can we make sure that those engineers have the training, tools and support that they need to do world-class engineering?
- If we can’t do world-class engineering, how can NZ compete on the world stage?
Motovated TeamWork as a Solution:
I thought about this a lot over the 25 years I’ve been engineering in NZ. That is on the back of 10 years as a Mechanic in Alaska, and 10 years as an Engineering Analyst in the US Aerospace industry. So for 45 years I’ve been developing the know-how to help mentor and grow our best engineers, in support of NZ’s engineering infrastructure. But we’re clear that Motovated as a consultancy can’t do it alone. We need to leverage the amazing engineering contractors that are all over NZ to help our manufacturers and suppliers excel.

We can’t compete on price or volume, so we need to stay ahead of the curve with niche, fit-for-purpose products. “Motovated TeamWork” connects New Zealand’s manufacturers with our contracting engineers, throughout NZ. Motovated is committed to expanding these relationships with additional engineering resource, offload support like analysis, and training to up everyone’s game. A rising tide floats all boats, and Motovated is committed to expanding, growing and mentoring our amazing contract engineers and connecting them with NZ’s best Manufacturers, when and where they need it.
Some Background:
When I emigrated to NZ I was struck by how differently engineering was done here. Around Seattle alone, where I worked for Boeing, they had 11,000 engineers from memory. I’m pretty sure that’s more degreed engineers than NZ has! As of May last year, Boeing had 56,000 engineers in total. The aligned collaboration that this makes possible is phenominal, and difficult to replicate. We’ll never complete with Boeing, but we need to compete with manufacturers overseas that have hundreds or thousands of engineers. As Ernest Rutherford said, “We haven’t got the money, so we’ve got to think.”.
When I came here I needed to learn to do things differently; to learn from, collaborate and share knowledge with amazing engineers all over NZ. What I noticed is the engineers here were much more pragmatic and hands-on than the degreed engineers in the States. Our engineers are very good at something, and OK at lots of things. But they didn’t have much support. Sometimes they’re working in small firms or on their own, with limited resources for training or mentoring. There aren’t many peers or mentors around them to bounce ideas off of, or to help guide and grow them.
And the things engineers don’t know, which is always more than we do know, often catches us, our firms and NZ out.
What we must avoid:
I’ve seen it happen time and again. Great ideas gets to market too soon, with insufficient fundamental engineering and peer review. The manufacturer cops it through product recalls, bad press; their bottom line and reputations suffers. A great product doesn’t last in market, and a good manufacturer goes under. Good engineers lose their jobs, and something that could have helped NZ compete on the world stage instead draws our economy and our reputation down.
This isn’t OK in Motovated’s books. We are committed to doing what we can to ensure that this scenario doesn’t happen. Motovated TeamWork is our latest idea on how to help NZ Manufacturers have access to world-class engineering.
